DIY House Stamp

11 March 2010
2

A few weeks ago I saw this post on Design Sponge. Holly Anne Rolfe is an illustrator who specializes in illustrating houses in various art mediums. She offers the service of turning your drawing into a stamp. Although normally I'd never be one to shoot down somebody's method of making a living, I thought, surely she's not the only one who can makes stamps like this and besides...who can afford the shipping from the U.K.?

So, with a little bit of time and a few supplies, I set about making my own illustration for my stamp.

You will need:

  1. Camera
  2. Printer & Scanner
  3. Vellum or Tracing Paper
  4. Drawing Pencil & Eraser
  5. Fine Tip Marker
  6. Ruler
  7. Patience
  8. about $25 (or less if you want a smaller stamp)

Take a photo of your house as straight on as you possibly can. Take Photo of House

Use a photo program like iPhoto or Picasa to make the image black & white and adjust the contrast so it's easier to trace. Print image in black & white on 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

Print photo in Grayscale

Trace the image using your ruler for the long edges and windows. I added a few plants and made our tree look less scraggily. (instant landscaping!)

Trace in Pencil

Go over all lines with a fine tipped marker. This takes time, but it will work really well for later. Go over pencil in marker

After your drawing is complete you can either take a picture of it with your camera (if you don't have a scanner) and it will look like this:

Or you can scan it in (the recommended method)and it will look like this:

At this point you can add your address to the bottom in a cool font, if you wish, and then resize it to the size that you want your stamp to be. I used the website, Rubberstamps.net to make my stamp and although they weren't the cheapest, I found their site easy to use and I've gotten custom stamps from them before and they are really well made.

voila!

I got my stamp today! I can't wait to use it on Elise & I's birthday invitations and who knows what else. The print looks so great and since this house is our "first home" I think I'll start a tradition. Any houses we ever buy, I'll make a stamp... It's just a cool way to commemorate our lovely abode!
