Organic
Organic produce is an important part of healthful eating. However, for most families on a budget, buying ALL organic can sometimes be a stretch. The Environmental Working Group is a non-profit environmental research organization that works to "...protect the most vulnerable segments of the human population—children, babies, and infants in the womb—from health problems attributed to a wide array of toxic contaminants." The EWG has compiled all kinds of information about organic produce and how you can best avoid pesticides in your food. The EWG maintains a list of fruits and vegetables that are best to buy organic, and which conventional ones are safest. They also have a list for print as well an iPhone app to help you with your shopping.
I've created a business sized card for you to print (click here to download the card) and carry in your wallet. Not everyone has iPhones, and frankly, I think MY list is prettier than theirs. :) Keep this card with you when you are shopping and you can use it as a guide to make good choices in the produce department. The Martha Stewart Living January 2010 issue has a great article with tons more information about organic produce and they also have information available on their site. Seeking out information about agriculture is part of exploring your world. Arm yourself with knowledge and make good choices for your meals!
