Stitch This
My 12 year old niece has started showing an interest in sewing recently and it reminds me of myself when I was that age. My mother taught me to sew when I was young. First sewing by hand and then by machine. By the time I was a teen, she would let me take her machine into my room and I'd spend hours turning vintage curtains into costumes, jeans into patchwork bell bottoms, and mini skirts into MUCH shorter mini skirts. :)
I definitely think access to a sewing machine was a huge part of what made me love sewing and crafting. I learned on my mom's Singer and now I have a Singer sewing machine of my own. I've read a lot of reviews on other machines and I think there are some out there that might work just as well, but I trust my Singer enough to recommend the brand to you.
Target has the Singer 1120 on sale right now for $89.99 (down from $140) and I think that is downright affordable for a starter machine. I also picked up a cool Amy Butler sewing project kit at Ross for $5. You can find it online for $24.95, but if you hunt around the post-holiday piles at your local store, you might find a kit for cheaper. It is chock full of cool patterns and easy projects to try. I am going to give these cute tote bags a whirl!
