Your Local Farmers Market
My Dad is a great inspiration to me in many ways, but especially in his efforts to "eat locally". He is an avid gardener and creates an astounding amount of produce in his garden. He also fishes locally, clams locally, and even provides duck eggs for a local bread shop.
While we were visiting, he took us by this little market that caters to the Oregon valley tourists, but also carries a great deal of local produce, cheese, and canned food like jellies, jams, and chutney. It was inspiring to see so much variety packed into the space and it got me thinking about the Oklahoma farmers markets. I need to start by finding out what is in season and work up some recipes to use our local foods to a greater advantage.
I've also interviewed a local chef, Ryan Parrott of Iguana Lounge and Table One, who specializes in finding local fare and incorporating it into his menus. He had a lot of insight into the locavore movement and some great suggestions for recipes that I hope to try and document in the food section of this blog. I'm going to post the interview under the people section sometime next week. In the meantime, I am going to use some of the local produce I picked up at Akin's Market to create some festive Holiday dishes and I'll be sure to share my results!
